Gwen Lister is a decades-long journalist and first woman newspaper editor in southern Africa. She founded The Namibian at the height of South African apartheid occupation of Namibia in 1985, and was jailed and narrowly escaped assassination. She co-chaired the 1991 Unesco conference which authored the Windhoek Declaration on a Free and Independent Press in Africa, leading the UN to adopt May 3 as World Press Freedom Day. She now chairs the Namibia Media Trust which publishes the newspaper and does press freedom advocacy and journalism training.
