A press for the planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis

Hosted by: UNESCO

Journalists play a critical role in providing access to verified information on the environmental crisis and accountability to its responses. At the same time, media professionals also face major risks when reporting and investigating climate issues. UNESCO dedicated the 2024 World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) to this topic to discuss concrete solutions: Tackling safety of environmental reporters, climate-change-related disinformation, and strengthening media capacities to report on the climate crisis.

This session presents key outcomes of the 2024 WPFD, provides a space to discuss how best to tackle these issues, and announces a call for partnerships for the legal defense of environmental journalists, supported by the UNESCO Global Media Defence Fund.
