Exploring new news (Why news doesn’t have to be bad)

Hosted by: Africa No Filter

How can we decolonize the media and address problematic headlines to improve storytelling? Let’s discuss editors’ roles in shaping news narratives and representation by focusing on the example of Africa. How can journalists emphasize ethical storytelling and diverse perspectives in newsrooms? How can they adapt to global trends like the demand for positive news and the influence of social media? What concrete steps, tools, and networks are needed?

This session aims to share solutions that can lead to more inclusive and representative coverage of Africa in the global media landscape.

Africa No Filter is a narrative change organisation on a mission to shift outdated perceptions of Africa by supporting the development of stories that represent Africa beyond stereotypes. We believe that we can shift harmful narratives about the continent by changing the underlying stories that fuel them. We do this through research, grant-making, community building and advocacy.
